The Troy State University Department of Speech and Theater will premier its production of "Antigone" at 7:30 p.m. tonight at the Adams Center Theater.

The production will also be performed at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 10 and 13. Tickets are $5 for general admission. Tickets may be purchased at the Trojan Center Box Office or at the door.

Ashley Fowler, public relations assistant for speech and theater department, said "Antigone" is a performance that all ages will enjoy.

"Antigone" was written by Sophocles in 440 B.C. and revolves around a Greek woman's devotion to her brother during a time of rebellion and warfare in ancient Thebes.

"There are a fight scenes in the production that are really outstanding," Fowler said. "Mike Rhyne, Troy University adjunct professor, has experience with the Alabama Shakespeare Theater and he choreographed the full-scale fight scenes. Mike specializes in fight scenes and they are amazing. This is a production that everyone will find entertaining."

The production is unique in that it includes a score composed by Troy University student Thomas Newman of Hawkinsville, Ga. The costumes that will be used were designed by Jessica Culpepper, a Troy University student from Montgomery.

Chris Rich of Troy is the scene and lighting director and Jill Chester, also of Troy, is the principal choreographer.

Fowler said the behind-the-scenes talents of students in the speech and theater department make "Antigone" a really remarkable performance.

The audience will be captivated by the performances of Bill Herring, Donaldsonville, Ga.; Georgia Mallory, Prattville; Jessica Culpepper, Montgomery; Nathan Benton, Hoover; Jeremy Byars, Dothan; Erin Turner, Birmingham; Wayne Taylor, Sandersville, Ga.; Leah Williams, Daphne; Heather Pennington, Birmingham; Marc Alewine, Montgomery; and Christopher Minton, Naples, Texas.

"The production is a fundamental piece of literature and we have made it unique in that so much of the preparatory work was done by students," said Adena Moree, director of the department of speech and theater.

Everyone is encouraged to attend a performance of "Antigone" and enjoy a great performance while supporting the arts at Troy State University and in the Troy community.
