No music comes close to the pre-Beatles era team of Lieber and Stoler. As much as anyone, they virtually invented rock ‘n’ roll, and their songs provide the basis for electrifying entertainment illuminating a golden age of American culture. Featuring nearly 40 of the greatest hits ever recorded, including enduring and iconic standards like “Kansas City”, “Hound Dog”, “ Stand By Me”, “Jailhouse Rock”, “Fools Fall in Love”, “Treat Me Nice”, and many more, it’s not just great pop music—it’s a compelling musical theatre revue!

THE ODYSSEY PROJECT

conceived, written, and composed by Tommy Newman

November 17 @7:30 p.m.

Location: Trojan Center Performing Arts Theatre

What might happen to famed Odysseus were he to be living in contemporary times? Homer’s epic and enduring story takes on a new perspective as he battles Cyclops, Circe, and the Lotus Eaters during the 21st century.

Conceived and written by Tommy Newman for orchestra, actors, dancers, and singers, the story focuses on the lives of Odysseus, Penelope, Telemachus, revealed through the storyteller, Homer. Mr. Newman has spent Fall 2011 in residence on the TROY campus writing the Odyssey Project. This staged reading will include the full text and musical underscore. The Department of Theatre and Dance plans to stage the full production Fall 2012.

THE IMPORTANCE of BEING EARNEST

by Oscar Wilde

January 18, 19, 20, 21, 25, 26, 27, 28 @7:30 p.m.

Location: Upstairs Studio Theatre in Malone Hall

Billed as a serious comedy for trivial people, The Importance of Being Earnest is perhaps the wittiest and most delightful comedy ever written, satirizing Victorian manners and customs in a light, effervescent, and bubbling style that is absolutely unforgettable. It’s fabulous fun and serious silliness start to finish with the hero naming himself “John” when in town and “Earnest” while in the country, only to find by the play’s end the “importance of being earnest”.
