  • The Creative Habit

The College of Communication and Fine Arts celebrates and supports the University’s Reading Initiative by choosing Twyla Tharp’s book, The Creative Habit to pilot the common major field experience in this College. Students and faculty alike are reading and working with Tharp’s book in classes, workshops, readings, and discussions. In support of the college-wide reading initiative and to enhance the creative habit in all of us, CCFA will present more than fifty fine and performing arts events this year including concerts, plays, exhibitions, and dance performances.

The Creative Habit is authored by one of America’s greatest choreographers, Twyla Tharp. She began her career in 1965 and has created more than 130 dances for her company as well as for the Joffrey Ballet, The New York City Ballet, Paris Opera Ballet, London’s Royal Ballet, and American Ballet Theatre. She won two Emmys for television’s Baryshnikov by Tharp, and a Tony Award for the recent Broadway musical, Movin’ Out. A recipient of a MacArthur Fellowship, she was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and is an honorary member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters.

“Though in context (her acclaimed book, The Creative Habit-Learn It and Use It for Life) is a choreographer’s work, its principles are universally applicable … emphasizing the work habits that lead to success… it could change your life”.
