Troy University focused its Summer Spotlight Creative Drama Camp on 84 children ages 6 – 13, culminating with a live performance Thursday night in the Trojan Center Theater.

An outreach of the College of Communication and Fine Arts, the Department of Theatre and Dance’s Summer Spotlight program is designed to both spread arts education and help prepare theater education majors for jobs.

“Summer Spotlight is really an important component for serving the arts, children and youth, the community and our students,” said Adena Moree, Director of Theatre and Dance, which offers a major in P-12 theatre education in concert with the College of Education.

“These children have a wonderful time, and our students really have a chance to hone their instructional delivery to these age groups,” she said.

For 4- and 5-year olds, the Mini-Spotlighters program teaches creative movement, dance, storytelling and arts and crafts. The half-day program has age-appropriate activities based on creative drama.

Rising first through eighth graders participate in day-long activities, workshops, and group and individual coaching sessions.

The camp ran from July 10 – 14, and included sessions in creative movement and stage combat, acting, stagecrafts, and creative drama. Each day also included a project period that focused on writing, stage combat, storytelling, musical theater, or tech crew issues.

Summer Spotlight continues July 17-22 with its Performance Intensive designed for rising ninth graders through entering freshman theater arts majors. This program focuses on all phases of performance and is designed provide intensive coaching in a variety of areas such as auditions, acting, directing, musical theater, voice, movement, dance, playwriting, business of theater, and scene study. A special Shakespeare Study is also offered.

SUMMER SPOTLIGHT is a featured program series brought to you by the Department of Theatre and Dance at Troy University. Current offerings are the PERFORMANCE INTENSIVE and the CREATIVE DRAMA CAMP, with a DANCE INTENSIVE beginning summer 2012 and a THEATRE and DANCE EDUCATORS INTENSIVE in the near future.
